Risking it All to Cross the St. Croix

lower falls from spillway

We woke up to a beautiful day...sunny, blue sky and not so hot.  Although the humidity was quite high.  After breakfast we went to Little Falls Lake, located in the campground, and to the lower falls located at the west end of the lake.  We then took the steep hike to Willow Falls.  Beautiful.  It appears to be a popular place.

In the afternoon we visited our friends, Jim and Kay Ehrhart, who live in Stillwater, MN.  What a cool town just across the river from Wisconsin and not far from our campground.  They live on a lake and their home is beautiful.  Kay had fresh guacamole prepared and Jim fixed our standby, Gin and Tonic, which was very refreshing on a warm day.  The guacamole was outstanding...as fine as anywhere in Puerto Vallarta.  Jim was "hinting" for a tip for the guacamole-maker, but I didn't bite.  After a great visit at their home, they took us on a tour of Stillwater.  It turns out that this is the oldest city in Minnesota.  All logging done in Wisconsin and Minnesota that would flow into the St. Croix, came down to Stillwater.  Speaking of the St. Croix, the biggest landmark on the river in the area of Stillwater is the Stillwater Bridge.  Built in 1931, the bridge has been deemed unsafe because of its deteriorating condition.  Pilings being eroded by salt and ice; metal structure rusting away.  Hence the title of this blog entry.  Some people in the area won't cross this bridge.  Others do so with their windows down and seat belts off so they can swim out if the bridge collapses.  We had a nice dinner at a restaurant along the river and I had Walleye for the first time...delicious!!!  It was great to see Jim and Kay and we look forward to games of sequence and Mexican Train in February!!!   (For some reason I couldn't download any more pictures so I'll try it again tomorrow.)
